<p>Running is an activity that cannot be overstated in terms of making people’s lives more meaningful. You might ask why I would go to such extent, well because that is the truth. Recent studies shows that there is a direct link with happiness and exercise. Running is probably the most common form of exercise more widely used by people than any other next to walking. The reason why someone runs or does any particular exercise activity can be many. It could be because he wants to wear his own six pack abs, he wants to shave some extra fat and a person wants to have a better overall figure. If running is done often enough the person can put a check-mark on any of those then he can be happy correct? It turns out that is just half of the story. The advancements of technology have enabled us to take a peek at even the most basic of our bodily functions.</p>
<p>When a person exerts energy towards physical activities like running, endorphins are released to the body; the same ones that are excreted when we are happy. So anytime you want to feel instant gratification, go ahead, just run.</p>
<p><strong>The problem</strong></p>
<p><a class="zem_slink" title="Knee pain" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knee_pain" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Knee pain</a> running is a phrase that often gets thrown around because of how often it occurs on the world of <a class="zem_slink" title="Professional sports" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_sports" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">professional athletes</a>. How many career ending injury related to <a class="zem_slink" title="Knee" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knee" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">knee</a> problems have we seen shatter the career of our favorite player? The bad thing is that it can affect all of us if we’re not careful. Athletes just happens to put themselves in situations where is more likely to occur because that’s where their job is.</p>
<p><strong>Why it happens?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The knee gets overused – over time this is the usually the main reason why athletes suffer from it more. Normal folks usually don’t have to trouble themselves with this this cause.</li>
<li>Direct <a class="zem_slink" title="Trauma (medicine)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trauma_%28medicine%29" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Trauma</a> – when your knee get in contact with a direct blow, it’s easy to figure what the result would be.</li>
<li>Flat foot – the problem with running when you’re flat footed is that there is more impact occurring during your every stride compared to the normal one. This shortens the durability of the tendons and tissues because of the abnormal amount of stress with your every step.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>How would it feel?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>You would feel pain behind the kneecap.</li>
<li>Every time you do something that involves bending the knee it hurts.</li>
<li>Swelling or fluids gets accumulated.</li>
<li>You get the feeling that there is grinding in the knee area.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>How to prevent</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Strengthen you thigh muscles.</li>
<li>Make sure you do stretching before any strenuous <a class="zem_slink" title="Physical exercise" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_exercise" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">physical activity</a> involving running.</li>
<li>There is something called orthotics which you slide as padding in your shoes to try to correct being flat footed.</li>
<li>Slowly make your way towards more workload of physical activity. Example: If you plan to enlist on your first 10k run, it would be a much better idea to try out the <a class="zem_slink" title="5000 metres" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5000_metres" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">5k run</a> first.</li>
<li>When you’ve already had the injury, wear a knee brace.</li>
</ul>

<p>Running is a common act of locomotion and is believed to be the oldest and one of the simplest forms of exercise. Comparing running and walking, better results in terms of calories burned and eventually weight loss is expected of the former due to the intensity of the said activity. Thus, it will require more knowledge and preparation if one intends to thoroughly experience the benefits of running.</p>
<p>If you’re just starting out with this activity here are a few guidelines in running for beginners:</p>
<p>You need to be sure that you are in good physical condition. Get your doctor’s approval on your intention to make running as a sport or hobby. Make certain that you also informed your doctor about how far you intend to run and for how long.</p>
<p>Find the right running <a class="zem_slink" title="Clothing" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">apparel</a>. You may need to buy a new, properly designed shoes fit for running. To do this, you might need to go a specialty <a class="zem_slink" title="Athletic shoe" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletic_shoe" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">running shoe</a> store and ask for a knowledgeable on buying the right running shoes to match your feet type and running motion. Find the one that is comfortable with a few millimeter of breathing space for your feet. Also wear comfortable clothes during your run. Women should be wearing sports bra that fits suitably and should not be worn out (for it will defeat the very purpose of the sports bra). If you decide that you want to continue with running then that is the time to invest in specialized running clothing with synthetic not cotton-made fabrics (like <a class="zem_slink" title="Coolmax" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolmax" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">CoolMax</a> or Dri-fit).</p>
<p>Remember to do warm-ups by walking five to ten minutes before the actual run. Muscles need to be flexed first to prevent too much formation of <a class="zem_slink" title="Lactic acid" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactic_acid" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">lactic acid</a> which causes cramps. After running, the same should be done to cool down.</p>
<p>Avoid shallow breathing. You should be able to breathe freely from your mouth if needed. If possible, breathing should be from the belly to prevent side stitches common among neophyte runners who tend to have shallow and quick breathing intakes. Universal rule for running is that a runner should be able to carry a conversation and still breathe easily while running.</p>
<p>Drink lots of water or <a class="zem_slink" title="Sports drink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_drink" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">sports drink</a> for rehydration. Be sure that your body is well hydrated before and during any point of you running. You may drink at least sixteen ounces of water or non-caffeinated drink an hour before running and at least 4-8 ounces before the start of your run to make certain the availability of proper water level in the body. While running, you may still need to drink some more. Common advice given to novice runners is to drink if you are thirsty to prevent dehydration. After running rehydrate again with at least 20 to 24 ounces of water; general rule of thumb is that your lips should not break. Running for beginners may not be that easy but the benefits surely outweighs all the efforts. Running is one of those things which get better after a while. So keep in mind the most important thing at the start is not giving up.</p>

<p>Earlier I saw a commercial that was just inspiring. It was about a guy running on his dwindling strength and having fun with whatever little is left of his will. The message was clear. Men are supposed to run. Running enforces the strength on places of our bodies that we really do need strength. Men finally need to realize that the lack of <a class="zem_slink" title="Physical exercise" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_exercise" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">physical exercise</a> is not helping the cause of finally getting up the race of <a class="zem_slink" title="Life expectancy" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_expectancy" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">life expectancy</a> with women. Women – in terms of life expectancy have left us men in the dust and just feeling sorry for ourselves.</p>
<p>Running is a good start if we plan to make our health go up in our priority list. It is fun. It relates to travel which we men naturally love – next to women. It is easy to find time for running because it will usually take us an hour or three so it can easily fit the empty slots on our schedules.</p>
<p>Naturally we want to take as little of our tech gadgets with us as possible when we are away trying to serenade nature, because running is in a way our very own little quiet time with the world. If one has his choice I’m sure every landscape he would pick as his running terrain would be a beauty. The problem is we are just usually bogged down by time, money or responsibilities so our escape time keeps getting pushed back.</p>

<p>It is very unlikely to see anyone running with his laptop or even a tablet at hand. It just wouldn’t make sense and if there are other people in the area you’re jogging into, the guy carrying those luggages would probably give everyone a nice laugh. Personally, I like to run without my possessions that I tend to take of my shirt when I’ halfway through. It feels great! It feels like that is really how we are supposed to live.</p>
<p>When it comes to being with nature and sweating it out at the same time, people usually wants to have company while we are running free. <p>Earlier when I was thinking of where to get <a class="zem_slink" title="Breakfast" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakfast" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">breakfast</a>, I thought about how to get there as well. That kind of thought hasn&#8217;t come up with me for awhile and perhaps it’s just my body asking for it to be my priority from time to time. Every morning me and oftentimes with the wife and kid would go the bakery or the local grocery. We do this as soon as all of us are awake. This morning I woke up a few ticks before 5:30 am and realizing the rest of the family members are still at least half an hour away from waking up, I decided to jog the <a class="zem_slink" title="200 metres" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/200_metres" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">200 meters</a> of distance from our house to where we buy the pastries for breakfast. Normally we would take a ride on the bike so it would only take about a minute to get there.</p>

<p>Making that decision earlier made me realize how I’ve so much strayed away from physical activities and how much my body needs it. The simple jog alone for a measly 200 meters did nothing but highlight how much I failed my own body and how weak I’ve become because of this. Upon getting back home after spending a few minutes of some needed run I felt my breathing cleared right away. I’ve forgotten how before I was able to sleep that I was having some trouble breathing. Last night, I kept sneezing for a good hour before I was able to take my rest. The morning jog earlier, no matter how insignificant it might seem, forced my <a class="zem_slink" title="Respiratory system" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respiratory_system" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">respiratory system</a> to get rid of some mucus that’s blocking my breathing. I have definitely felt the relief brought by that 200 meters jog.</p>
<p>Getting back to my computer for work after breakfast, I opened another tab and typed the phrase “run Santa run”. I have heard that on the coming months before <a class="zem_slink" title="Christmas" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Christmas</a>, there would be running events named after Santa. The results I found are about <a class="zem_slink" title="Online game" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_game" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">online games</a> which are so much popular nowadays. It’s a fun game made of flash, I can’t help but to mess around it for a few minutes. It’s not surprising that games like these are not only popular on web browsers but it’s already gaining ground as a mobile app as well. The game was about Santa dodging many hazards so he could get back to his job delivering presents to kids which he somehow has forgotten and that is why he is on such a hurried pace on the game (Fun intended I know).</p>
<p>After playing with that game for a few minutes, I finally found the page where it says that there would indeed be a 5k/10k running event which will not be held for another month. I would just have to take note of that. For now, one thing is for sure, every morning I’ll jog starting tomorrow. I know I’m not alone at this scenario wherein as our careers progress it becomes harder for us to find time for ourselves. After reading this, I hope you; my reader would find that patch of time for yourself as well because no matter how insignificant it might be, a 200 meter jog made a believer out of me.</p>

There is also <a class="zem_slink" title="Long-distance track event" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-distance_track_event" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">distance running</a> like the 5k and 10k runs and <a class="zem_slink" title="Marathon" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">marathons</a>, of course, the winner is determined by who covers the distance in the shortest amount of time as well. Obstacles can also be integrated in running, in the likes of steeple chase and hurdles and running can also be integrated into more challenging competitions that test the strength and endurance of an athlete like the triathlon. This type of competition requires the athlete to compete in three events, to be specific, cycling, swimming and running. Running can also be competed in groups like in relays.</p>

<p>Running is one of the most basic movements that enable a human to move faster by foot. Running is considered as a training technique and it is also one of the most popular events in sports competitions even in the Olympics where it is referred as <a class="zem_slink" title="Track and field" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Track_and_field" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">track and field</a>. Running as a training method is used by trainers or coaches to develop the endurance of an athlete. <p>There are different speeds and distances that a runner can cover and it depends on what fitness level the runner have. For a newbie, running could be done on a treadmill to get their bodies into shape before competitive running is introduced. Proper training that is consistent in slowly increasing the speed and the distance covered by a trainee is always the best and safest way to go. For starters, being aware of how the body responds while running is the way to know if he can still endure the distance that he wants. If the runner feels exhausted, he can slow down and try a shorter distance for now. <p>Running has been embedded on our DNA as being fun. It triggers a deep instinct within us that releases the feeling of excitement and freedom. Remember Forrest Gump? Even though it is a fictional story, it garnered so much success because of how accurate it reflects the human psyche and emotion. There was a part in the movie when Forrest just ran across the country. He travelled the United States by foot and many followed his example. For no apparent reason, people found a something to motivate themselves in joining him. They travelled great distances without knowing what Forrest’s purpose was on why he started running. The entire country was in awe; Forrest served as an inspiration for the people who follows him across the nation and for everyone watching him at home on their television. When they finally got the chance to ask him what exactly his reason was on why he started running, he simply answered them, “I just felt running”.</p>
<p>That statement justified everything. It took us to the depths of people’s hearts and minds that usually are not spoken. We are designed to run and our body rewards us with pleasant feeling every time we do so.</p>
